Fundamentals of Protein Structure and Function: Buxbaum

The four levels of protein structure are primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary. It is helpful to understand the nature and function of each level of protein structure in order to fully understand how a protein works. By Tracy Kovach. The Protein database is a collection of sequences from several sources, including translations from annotated coding regions in GenBank, RefSeq and TPA, as well as records from SwissProt, PIR, PRF, and PDB. Protein sequences are the fundamental determinants of biological structure and function. Protein Structure. Edited by: Eshel Faraggi.

Proteins also have structural or mechanical functions, such as actin and myosin in muscle and the proteins in the cytoskeleton, which form a system of scaffolding that maintains cell shape. A protein molecule is very large compared with molecules of sugar or salt and consists of many amino acids joined together to form long chains, much as beads are arranged on a string. There are about 20 different amino acids that occur naturally in proteins. Proteins of similar function have similar amino acid composition and sequence. Tertiary Structure of Proteins: The helical form of polypeptide folds into spherical, globular, ellipsoidal or other conformation, which is called the tertiary structure of proteins. This folding is necessary for the biological activity of the proteins. e.g., enzymes, immunoglobulin’s.

Different Types of Protein Structure. The structure of proteins is directly related to their function and may be primary, secondary, tertiary, or quaternary. Primary Protein Structure. The most basic type of protein structure is called the primary structure. A primary protein is a simple, linear chain of amino acids (AKA a polypeptide chain).

Tertiary structure refers to the complete three-dimensional structure of the polypeptide units of a given protein. Included in this description is the spatial relationship of different secondary structures to one another within a polypeptide chain and how these secondary structures themselves fold into the three-dimensional form of the protein. Proteins are linear chains of amino acids joined by peptide bonds. Twenty amino acids are incorporated into a protein by translation. In some proteins, the amino acids are modified by subsequent post ‐translational events.
